I bought one like that and the light worked pretty good. I noticed the batteries on the inside and wondered if the LED just ran on those batteries and the shaking thing was a hoax. So I turned it on and left it on for a week. It finally went completely dead. I shook it for about a minute and IT CAME ON! ...for about 15 seconds.

Never could get it to last more than a minute no mattter how much i shook it. Threw it away.

the cheap versions use a watch battery hidden inside.

the good ones use capacitors which eventually wear out anyway
